Moving to a new city can be both exciting and frightening at the same time. A new culture, a new language, a new environment; it’s something to look forward to.
Before you finish up your packing and say your final, tear-inducing goodbyes to your family and friends; you’ll need to sought out a place to live in your new city. It’s certainly no secret that finding accommodation in a brand new, unfamiliar city is no easy task; but, trust us on this, the whole process doesn’t have to be quite as scary as it sounds.
In an attempt to help keep your stresses at bay and help you relax in preparation for your big move abroad, we’re listing a few ways you can find accommodation in a new city.
1. Make a list of what you want.
Before you get started, it’s a good idea figuring out what it is you actually want in terms of accommodation in your new city. Ideally, what do you want it to look like? Would you prefer a room in a shared apartment? Would you prefer a central location, or do you like the idea of living on the outskirts? How much are you willing to pay each month? Answer these questions and you’ll help to narrow down your own search process.
2. Look online.
Doing a simple Google search for “rent in X city” will, undoubtedly, bring up a plethora of options for you to choose from. You can also try to look for niche Facebook groups with rent offers in your new city, as they could be listed here before anywhere else online. When searching for accommodation online, always be sure to look for credible offers complete with photos, as they will help you gauge an overall idea and feel of the place.
3. Talk to people who have lived or live there.
Talking to people who have lived, or already live, in your destination city is the best way to find accommodation. They will be able to tell, from their own personal experiences, the best locations to live, where will be more budget-friendly, etc. They may even have friends who are looking for tenants, and you might just fit the bill perfectly. Get talking!
