Shipping a bike doesn’t have to be difficult. While it may seem daunting at first, the process is quite simple. Whether you’re sending your bike across the country or overseas, making sure it’s properly prepared for shipping is key to ensuring a smooth journey. Whatever destination you’re travelling to, whether it’s the stunning Canadian Rockies, the vineyards of Italy, or the French Alps, you can ship your bike ahead with ease.

At My Baggage, we make shipping a bike simple, and we’ve put together some helpful tips to ensure your bike is fully prepared for its journey.

1. Use Appropriate Packaging

When shipping a bike, it should be placed in suitable packaging for transit; we recommend a travel case or a bike box. These can be purchased online at an affordable price and provide excellent protection during transport. You can also check with your local bicycle shop to see if they offer any packaging options.

2. Clean Your Bike Before Packing

Ensure your bike is thoroughly cleaned and dried before packing it. This helps keep the packaging intact, and it’s essential to remove any dirt or oil residue, particularly around the wheels and chain. Remember that when shipping a bike internationally, it will go through customs checks, and many countries are quite particular about this. To avoid customs issues or delays, keep it nice and clean. Plus, it’ll be easier to package and handle.

3. Disassemble Your Bike

To ensure your bike fits properly into a travel case or bike box, it will need to be disassembled. Typically, you can remove the pedals, wheels, handlebars, and saddle using an Allen key or spanner. This makes it easier to handle all the components when packaging. Don’t forget to protect the chain as well; shift it onto the small chainring and the largest rear cog.

4. Remove Extra Components

If there are additional components such as lights, water bottles, or mudguards, it’s advisable to remove them before packing. This will help prevent damage and create more space for your bike frame.

5. Wrap the Essential Parts

Protect any extra components or parts that you have removed from the bike by wrapping items like the handlebars, pedals, lights, and mudguards with protective foam packaging, bubble wrap, or old fabrics such as towels. This will help ensure that everything is well-protected from potential scrapes or bumps during transit.

6. Pack the Bike Frame First

We recommend packing the bike frame first, making sure it is securely cushioned with appropriate padding to prevent any movement within the travel case or bike box during shipment. This will help prevent it from hitting or scraping against other objects inside the packaging.

7. Secure the Wheels and Extra Components

Once the bike frame is securely packed, wrap and protect the wheels before placing them into the package, ensuring they fit snugly beside the frame. Add any extra components you previously removed, such as the handlebars and saddle. Using appropriate foam packaging or bubble wrap will help keep everything secure when shipping a bike.

8. Fill Any Empty Space

Once you’ve packed everything securely, make sure to fill any empty spaces. You can use any leftover bubble wrap or crumpled newspaper. This will prevent movement and ensure that everything is properly secured.

9. Label & Seal Your Packaging

Once you’re happy that everything is ready to go, it’s time to attach your labels to the package. At My Baggage, we’ll send you two labels; we recommend placing one inside the package before sealing it as an extra precaution in case the original labels come off or are damaged. Ensure that your package is taped shut securely. If you’re using a travel case, do not lock it, as your shipment may be subject to customs checks and may need to be inspected. Double-check that all necessary shipping labels are attached to the box and are clearly visible for the courier.

10. Let My Baggage Handle Your Bike Shipment

Now that your packaging is sorted, you can sit back and relax. My Baggage will collect your bike on the advised date and deliver it to its destination. You can monitor the progress of your shipment using our comprehensive online tracking system.

Other Important Considerations for Shipping a Bike

When shipping items, there is a list of prohibited items that cannot be sent, and batteries are among them. Therefore, we cannot ship electric bikes using our service. Please keep this in mind when packaging your bike; if you reuse a box that previously contained an electric bike, it may cause confusion with the courier and could result in delays or refusal of your shipment. It’s best to use plain packaging. Also, remember that sending chain oil or any liquids is not allowed.
