All Air Canada passengers are permitted to carry one standard article of carry-on baggage and one small personal article (such as a handbag, laptop bag, or a backpack) onboard the aircraft. Below are the weights and measurements for carry-in baggage on flights operated by Air Canada.

Carry-on baggage should not exceed 55 x 40 x 23cm (21.5 x 15.5 x 9in) and the small item should not exceed 33 x 43 x 16cm (13 x 17 x 6in). Measurements should include the wheels and handles. Whilst there is no weight limit on carry-on items, they must be light enough that you can stow them in the overhead lockers unaided.

If your carry-on baggage exceeds the limits advised, you may be charged excess baggage fees at the airport.
The checked baggage allowance with Air Canada depends on your cabin class, fare type, and loyalty status. Each piece of checked baggage should not exceed the linear dimensions of 158cm (62in), including the handles and wheels. The weight allowance ranges from 23KG (50lb) to 32KG (70lb).

For more details on checked baggage allowances with Air Canada, please refer to the information provided below. You can also use Air Canada’s checked baggage calculator to determine your specific allowance.

If you are flying with Air Canada and your infant will be on your lap - you are permitted to bring one additional standard carry-on item, providing it does not exceed 55 x 40 x 23 cm (21.5 x 15.5 x 9 in).

If the item exceeds these limits, it will be considered checked baggage, and additional fees may apply.

For any checked baggage exceeding the advised limits, additional fees will apply. If your item is deemed as overweight or oversized, it's recommended to arrive at least 2 hours before departure. You can consult the Air Canada baggage calculator for further details.

Items that exceed any of the following criteria will need to be sent as Cargo with Air Canada:

  • Weight: 32KG (70lb)
  • Linear Dimensions: 292cm (115in)
  • Length: 203cm (80in)

Air Canada allows a number of special items to be checked in for your flight, including sports equipment and musical instruments. Depending on the item in question, including the weight and measurements, additional fees may apply. However, some items are also classed as one piece of checked baggage. You can refer to Air Canada’s special items list for more information.

Certain items cannot be accepted as checked baggage due to their size, including bobsleighs, canoes, hang gliders, luges, and windsurfing equipment.

What is a Connecting Flight?

Connecting flights refer to you taking multiple flights in order to reach your destination. This results in having a longer journey time, however, it’s quite common when direct services are not available.

If you have a connecting flight booked on the same ticket, typically your baggage will be checked through to your final destination. However, with potential flight delays, busy airports, and tight connections, you might make the connection, but often your baggage does not. This is why more and more travellers are travelling light by shipping their luggage ahead.

Many low-cost airlines don't offer connecting flights. This means it's your responsibility to manage your onward connections, and collect your baggage after each flight.

If you’re unsure, we recommend that you contact your airline directly.
