If you’re travelling with Icelandair on an upcoming flight, here’s everything you need to know about your baggage allowance and fees.
Your baggage allowance may differ depending on your route, ticket type, and class of service.
Passengers travelling on an international flight are permitted to take one carry-on bag onboard, however it must fit in the overhead locker. The item must not exceed 55 x 40 x 20cm, with a maximum weight of 10KG.
Passengers travelling on a flight within Iceland, or to/from Greenland, are permitted to take one carry-on bag onboard, however it must fit in the overhead locker. The item must not exceed 55 x 30 x 20cm, with a maximum weight of 6KG.
In addition to their carry-on baggage, all passengers may take one small personal item onboard, however it must fit under the seat in front. The small personal item must not exceed 40 x 30 x 15cm.
Checked baggage must not exceed the total combined dimensions of 158cm. However, the weight allowance may differ depending on your route, ticket type, and class of service.
Passengers travelling within Iceland, or on an international flight booked in Economy Standard or Economy Flex are permitted one checked bag weighing no more than 23KG. However, passengers travelling to or from Greenland may not exceed more than 20KG.
Economy light tickets do not include any checked baggage, this will need to be purchased before your flight.
Passengers booked in Saga Premium or Saga Premium Flex are permitted two checked bags weighing no more than 32KG each.
If your checked baggage exceeds the weight or size restrictions, or is classed as odd-sized baggage, excess fees will apply. These will depend on the item, and route. Excess baggage fees are non-refundable.
Excess Baggage can be purchased via the 'Manage Booking' function with Icelandair, however it's important to note that items over a certain size, or weighing more than 32KG, may not be accommodated. Purchasing heavy bags, or extra bags, for connecting flights (operated by other airlines) can only be done at the airport.
Purchasing an extra bag weighing up to 23KG between Iceland and Europe is from £47, between Iceland and North America is from £55, or from Europe to North America (or vice-versa) via Iceland is from £75. Prices are based on advanced online purchases and apply to one-way flights.
Icelandair permits a wide range of sports equipment on their flights. Sports Equipment can be added and purchased via Icelandair’s website up to 7 days before your flight - after that period you will be required to pay for your items at the airport which will be more expensive. For hunting gear, this can only be paid for at the airport.
Musical Instruments are also permitted on Icelandair flights, however, their size and weight may determine whether they should be checked-in or carried on board. For larger instruments, they may need to be checked-in and considered as excess baggage. Smaller instruments can be included in your cabin baggage allowance if they meet the necessary requirements.
Full details can be found on the Icelandair website.
Icelandair accept a number of items classed as Special Baggage including Avalanche Backpacks, Drones, Walking Poles, and much more. However, there are restrictions on certain items - we recommend checking with Icelandair directly.
Icelandair is the flag carrier of Iceland, offering both domestic flights, and services to/from Greenland. They also offer an extensive range of flights to Europe and North America, via their main hub at Keflavik. Operating a mixed fleet of Boeing and De Havilland aircraft, their standard cabin class is Economy, with the additional offering of Saga Premium class on international flights.
When travelling internationally, it’s a requirement that you pass through customs. However, for domestic travel, or travel within the EU, customs is not usually required. In all cases, you will pass through security checks, to which it’s likely your ID and Documents will be checked, so it’s a good idea to have these documents ready and available throughout your journey.
Entry requirements vary from country to country. It’s very important that you research the exact requirements specific to you before you travel, as certain countries may require a visa, proof of insurance, and possibly bank statements. Your passport must also be valid for the full duration of your stay, with some countries requiring at least 6 months validity. However, all requirements will differ and are subject to your specific circumstances, such as duration of stay, purpose of travel, and the regulations that the country has set.
We recommend sourcing information about entry requirements from the country’s official websites.

Connecting flights refer to you taking multiple flights in order to reach your destination. This results in having a longer journey time, however, it’s quite common when direct services are not available.
If you have a connecting flight booked on the same ticket, typically your baggage will be checked through to your final destination. However, with potential flight delays, busy airports, and tight connections, you might make the connection, but often your baggage does not. This is why more and more travellers are travelling light by shipping their luggage ahead.
Many low-cost airlines don't offer connecting flights. This means it's your responsibility to manage your onward connections, and collect your baggage after each flight.
If you’re unsure, we recommend that you contact your airline directly.
