If you’re travelling with Virgin Atlantic on an upcoming flight, here’s everything you need to know about your baggage allowance and fees. Your baggage allowance with Virgin Atlantic is determined by your ticket type and cabin class.
All passengers travelling with Virgin Atlantic have hand luggage included.
Hand Luggage with Virgin Atlantic must not exceed 56 x 36 x 23cm, and must be placed into the overhead lockers.
The weight allowance depends on the cabin class:
Passengers travelling in Upper Class will be required to split their 16KG allowance over two bags as one item may not exceed 12KG. For example, one bag may weigh 10KG, and the other could be 6KG.
In addition to the hand baggage allowance, all passengers may take onboard one small personal item such as a handbag, however, it must fit under the seat in front.
Checked Baggage with Virgin Atlantic must not exceed 90 x 75 x 43cm.
The number of pieces and weight allowance depends on the ticket type you have booked.
Virgin Atlantic Ticket Type | Pieces of Checked Baggage | Weight Allowance |

For Children or Infants that have their own seat, they will receive the same baggage allowance as other travellers. Infants travelling on a lap are also permitted to one piece of checked baggage (except for tickets booked in Economy Light).
In addition to the standard baggage allowance, Virgin Atlantic Flying Club Gold Tier members can check in an additional piece of baggage up to 23KG on all Virgin Atlantic operated flights free of charge.
Please note that there are extra baggage allowances available on selected routes including to/from India, Nigeria, and South Africa.
If you need to add extra baggage to your Virgin Atlantic flight, you can do so. You add up to 10 pieces of luggage per passenger. This can be done at the airport, however, you will save considerably if you add this advance online.
Overweight or oversized bags charges differ, depending on the number of bags you are bringing as well as the ticket type you have purchased - this includes taking Sports Equipment or Musical Instruments. For more information, we recommend contacting Virgin Atlantic directly.
Virgin Atlantic operates a range of long-haul flights between the UK and North America, the Caribbean, Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. It’s main hub is at London Heathrow, but it has a large presence at Manchester and other parts of the world. They provide comfortable and stylish flying options in Economy, Premium Economy, and Upper Class, all of which are serviced by a modern fleet of Airbus and Boeing aircraft.
When travelling internationally, it’s a requirement that you pass through customs. However, for domestic travel, or travel within the EU, customs is not usually required. In all cases, you will pass through security checks, to which it’s likely your ID and Documents will be checked, so it’s a good idea to have these documents ready and available throughout your journey.
Entry requirements vary from country to country. It’s very important that you research the exact requirements specific to you before you travel, as certain countries may require a visa, proof of insurance, and possibly bank statements. Your passport must also be valid for the full duration of your stay, with some countries requiring at least 6 months validity. However, all requirements will differ and are subject to your specific circumstances, such as duration of stay, purpose of travel, and the regulations that the country has set.
We recommend sourcing information about entry requirements from the country’s official websites.
Connecting flights refer to you taking multiple flights in order to reach your destination. This results in having a longer journey time, however, it’s quite common when direct services are not available.
If you have a connecting flight booked on the same ticket, typically your baggage will be checked through to your final destination. However, with potential flight delays, busy airports, and tight connections, you might make the connection, but often your baggage does not. This is why more and more travellers are travelling light by shipping their luggage ahead.
Many low-cost airlines don't offer connecting flights. This means it's your responsibility to manage your onward connections, and collect your baggage after each flight.
If you’re unsure, we recommend that you contact your airline directly.
